"Cinematography is the art and technology of motion-picture photography. It involves such techniques as the general composition of a scene; the lighting of the set or location; the choice of cameras, lenses, filters, and film stock; the camera angle and movements; and the integration of any special effects."
Below are some screenshots from a short film I was hired for as cinematographer.
Cinematography is where I feel most at home and I would like to explain how I got here - Mr Tievoli
Filmed around Embankment, London
My passion for cinematography began with my early experiences in art galleries staring at renaissance paintings (below). The way Rembrandt was able to show emotion in his paintings using shadows and subtle warm lighting had me hooked. Of course, I didn't realise this as a 13 year old boy but through my own art and eventual photo editing later in my life I noticed a pattern emerging. Very little of my work was brightly lit. I liked emphasising shadows and manipulating the colour to evoke a strong emotional reaction.
Inspiration from movies has played a huge part in developing my artistic personality and style. This came much later in my life, as despite watching my fair share of movies I wouldn't have considered myself a movie buff. The impact watching movies eventually had on me didn't become apparent until my 30's when I began to be drawn deeper and deeper into the world of cinematography. I began to appreciate the skill involved in turning a movie set into a story using a limitless number of techniques that up and until now I had been naturally drawn to in my own art. I love the way colour, shadows, lights and composition work in harmony to carry a feeling of emotion to the audience watching. It's a visual expression of something deep and this is what I knew I wanted to do. I express myself through my art and I now have the best medium with which to do this. Film.
